Accessibility

Last updated

How this site is built to be usable with a keyboard, a screen reader, magnification, or reduced motion, what we know is not perfect yet, and how to reach us if something blocks you.

Our commitment

We want anyone who needs low voltage, security, or network work to be able to read this site and reach us, whatever they are using to browse it. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.2, at level AA, and we treat that as the standard the site has to keep meeting rather than a box that was ticked once.

Accessibility is part of how the site gets built here. The guidelines are written into the project’s development rules, and every new page and component is reviewed against them before it ships.

What the site does

  • Everything works with a keyboard alone, in a sensible order, and the focused element always has a clearly visible outline that nothing covers.
  • A skip to content link is the first thing you reach on every page, so you can jump past the navigation.
  • Pages use real headings in order, real landmarks, and native controls: buttons are buttons, links are links, and checkboxes and radios are the real elements rather than styled boxes.
  • Every form field has a visible label above it, not a placeholder pretending to be one, with help text where it is useful.
  • When something is wrong in the form, the message appears in text beside the field, carries an icon as well as color, moves focus to the first problem, and is announced politely to screen readers.
  • The multi step request form can be worked through entirely by keyboard, its progress is a real ordered list with the current step marked, and completed steps are shown with a check mark and text rather than color alone.
  • File attachment offers a normal button and file picker; drag and drop is a convenience, never the only way.
  • Color is never the only way information is given, and text contrast is checked against the guidelines in both the light and dark themes.
  • Motion is small and purposeful. If your system asks for reduced motion, animation is switched off rather than merely shortened, and the one moving row of brand logos is replaced by a static grid.
  • Zoom and pinch are never disabled, text reflows without a horizontal scrollbar down to a 320 pixel wide screen, and touch targets are at least 44 pixels.
  • Images that carry meaning have descriptions; decorative ones are hidden from assistive technology so they do not add noise.
  • Each page has its own descriptive title, and the site works with a light or dark theme according to your system setting.

What we know is not perfect

Being straight about this is more useful than a claim of full compliance:

  • The site has been tested by our own team with a keyboard, with reduced motion, at high zoom, and with automated checks. It has not yet been audited independently or tested with a panel of disabled users. We intend to arrange that.
  • The summary table in the privacy policy is wider than a phone screen, so on a narrow screen it scrolls sideways inside its own region. The same information is written out in full in the sections beneath it.
  • Any document you send us, such as a PDF plan, is your own file and we cannot make it accessible for you.
  • We have not tested every combination of browser and assistive technology. If yours behaves differently from what is described here, please tell us; that report is genuinely useful.

If something here blocks you

Telling us about a problem

Please report anything that does not work for you, even if you are not sure it is our fault. It helps if you can include:

  • the address of the page you were on;
  • what you were trying to do;
  • what happened instead;
  • the browser, device, and any assistive technology you were using, if you know.

Send it by any of the routes under how to reach us. We aim to reply within five business days, and we will tell you what we are going to do about it and when. If a fix will take a while, we will offer you another way to get what you needed in the meantime.

Standards and approach

We target WCAG 2.2 level AA. This statement describes the public pages of this website. It was prepared on the effective date shown at the top, based on our own review of the site, and it is revisited whenever a page changes substantially.
